What Is EPUB 3.2 Specification?

✍: FYIcenter.com

EPUB 3.2 Specification is the 3.2 version of EPUB specification, released on May 8, 2019.

EPUB 3.2 is considered as a successor to both EPUB 3.0.1 and EPUB 3.1. EPUB 3.1 did not receive wide adoption due to incompatibilities with previous versions, so EPUB 3.2 was developed to be strongly backward-compatible with EPUB 3.0.1, while retaining many of the changes made in EPUB 3.1

EPUB 3.2 Specification consists of 6 documents:

  • EPUB 3.2 - Provides a high level definition of EPUB 3.2 as a distribution and interchange format for digital publications and documents.
  • Packages 3.2 - Defines semantics and conformance requirements for an EPUB® Package.
  • Content Documents 3.2 - Defines profiles of HTML, SVG, and CSS for use in the context of EPUB® Publications.
  • Open Container Format (OCF) 3.2 - Defines a file format and processing model for encapsulating the set of related resources that comprise an EPUB® Publication into a single-file container, the EPUB Container.
  • Media Overlays 3.2 - Defines a usage of [SMIL] (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language), the Package Document, CSS Style Sheets, and EPUB® Content Documents for representation of audio synchronized with the EPUB Content Document.
  • Accessibility [EPUBAccessibility] — defines accessibility conformance and discovery requirements for EPUB Publications.
